Living on Bald Mountain in Camden, I enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the weather advancing toward and retreating from Camden and Rockport harbors. On this particular day the atmosphere was wildly changeable, the fog rolling in at a swift clip and swallowing boats in its way. I got to Rockport Harbor just before the fog gulped it all down. Warm and cold air colliding can be stunning. The kayaker hugged the harbor while the little motorboat sped ahead toward the mystery. I too choose to shoot in that mystery of fog, mist, and rain.

Growing up in “The County”—a place comprising endless back roads, vast fields, and scenic views around every turn—made me come to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us all. Every time I visit, I make it a priority to ride those back roads, photographing as much as possible. While out on one of my afternoon rides, I came upon one of the Amish communities, where the horses just happened to be outside despite the cold temperatures. The red barn, rising moon, and gradient of blue sky were too beautiful to resist.

One morning last January, while out for a snowmobile ride in Maine’s western mountains, I was looking for moose to photograph and was about to head home when I happened to look at the top of the cut with my camera and saw a cow moose walking through. I kept scanning and found these smaller bulls sparing! I was able to watch them for 15 minutes before they wandered out of view. I’ve always wanted to see moose sparing, so it was a moment I was able to check off the bucket list!

After posting online about how I was looking to take photos of fox kits (baby foxes) and that I would make a print for whoever could lead me to them, I got a message from someone in Bridgton who had recently seen kits emerge from their den. They sent me pictures of seven kits on their lawn, and it was amazing. I drove to Bridgton that same day and waited. Sure enough, the mother came out of the den first, and the kits followed soon after. For a wildlife photographer, it was a dream.

At Land’s End at the closing of the Milky Way season, I waited patiently in the quiet of the night for the moon to set and our home galaxy to appear. Standing by the fisherman memorial dedicated to all the fishermen and -women who’ve devoted their lives to the sea, I watched as the sky fell into darkness revealing first Jupiter, then Saturn, and then the billions of stars above. Such a fun evening spent admiring the sky while listening to the sounds of the waves crashing against the craggy Maine coastline.

On Memorial Day weekend, my family and I took the Casco Bay Line ferry to Great Diamond Island to stay for the holiday. While enjoying a beautiful dinner on the lawn of Diamond’s Edge Restaurant on the second night of our trip, I walked over to the marina to take in the evening sky. The dock was busy with guests and island staff boarding the ferry, heading back to Portland for the night. As I stood there, the sky started to glow while the sun set. The prettiest warm light fell over the cove, as the brightly colored yellow, white, and red ferry faded into the horizon.

The Coyote’s Den at the Howling Woods in Seal Cove will always hold a special place in my heart. For years, I have come to this spot to be with nature, and to share the dream of simple, mindful, and intentional living, in tune with the environment around us. From the joys of cooking farm-fresh eggs in a cast-iron pan over a woodstove to the late-night howls of the coyotes, this little place feels like a home away from home.

I captured this image of Kate-Lyn Knight, owner of Rocky Bottom Fisheries, as she hauled a lobster trap off Cape Elizabeth’s shore during a lobster demonstration tour. From May through October, Knight takes guests out on the water from Portland to experience lobstering, including taking lobsters out of traps, measuring the lobsters, banding them, baiting the trap, and setting the trap back into the ocean. If they want, they can do it all while wearing fisherman fashion: rubber aprons and gloves.

Folks from all over the Northeast come to Damariscotta Mills each year to witness hundreds of thousands of alewives navigate one of the state’s most extensive fish ladders. As the fish enter the channel, photographers capture diving osprey and eagles surfacing with alewives clenched by their talons. As I stood upon the bridge waiting for birds with camera in hand, the scene below caught my eye. A massive school of alewives entered the channel just below me, and with the light just right this made for a wonderful composition.

As a photographer and a mom of two young boys, I’m always on the lookout for new family adventures. When I stumbled across an image of Bald Head Cliff, I was stunned to learn this hidden gem is just down the road from us. It’s hard to put the beauty of the rock formation into words; the sheer size of the cliff leaves you in complete awe as you walk down the steps. For my adventurous boys, it’s even more incredible to climb and explore. It was the perfect Maine spring outing, one for the memory books.
